O Cerrado é a mais importante área de recarga hídrica do Brasil. É nele que brotam importantes rios que percorrem nosso País. O Cerrado equivale a mais de 1/3 do território brasileiro e é a savana mais biodiversa do mundo, mas, na contramão de toda essa riqueza, o planejamento político brasileiro enxerga o Cerrado como região de expansão da fronteira agrícola.

O cenário é estarrecedor. Somente em 2020, o desmatamento no Cerrado totalizou 7,3 mil km² e foram registrados mais de 63 mil focos de incêndio, segundo dados do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe). Devido a suas características de vegetação resistente e tortuosa, o Cerrado é visto por alguns como um bioma "dispensável" ou resiliente à destruição. Mas nada disso é verdade!

Boa parte do Cerrado não se regenera e destruí-lo significa destruir as fontes de água do nosso país.

Há mais de 10 anos a Comissão Pastoral da Terra trabalha realizando experiências comunitárias de recuperação de nascentes e do solo de áreas degradadas do Cerrado. Os primeiros projetos foram desenvolvidos nos estados de Goiás e Mato Grosso.

Além de Goiás e Mato Grosso, agora também queremos beneficiar comunidades no Maranhão, Piauí e Mato Grosso do Sul. Com a sua ajuda, podemos garantir que as águas continuem brotando no Cerrado e abastecendo o país.

A Campanha SALVE UMA NASCENTE vai realizar processos de formação junto a várias comunidades e camponeses(as) cerradeiros(as) na luta em defesa das águas, da terra e das florestas. 

A ideia é que eles se tornem multiplicadores e, assim, vamos construir verdadeiras redes de proteção para as nascentes do Cerrado.

Piauí

Nascente no Território Vão do Vico, Município de Santa Filomena. A comunidade indígena Gamela conta com 17 famílias e vem sofrendo com a ação de grileiros e com o avanço da soja. A mata de cobertura de proteção das nascentes foi destruída e as chuvas carregaram muita areia, soterrando muitas delas.

Maranhão 

Uma das nascentes do Rio Itapecuru, um curso d’agua com 1.450 quilômetros de extensão e largura de 50 a 120 metros, que banha o Estado do Maranhão. As primeiras águas brotam no “Vão do Pinto”, no município de São Raimundo das Mangabeiras. A bacia do Itapecuru abastece 60% da população da capital São Luís, além de outras cidades no Estado.

Goiás

A nascente do Rio Caldas abastece todo o distrito do Cruzeiro do Bom Jardim, localizado no município de Silvânia. Ali vivem 40 famílias que sobrevivem da agricultura familiar. A comunidade enfrenta o problema do desmatamento e da diminuição das águas com o avanço da monocultura da soja e a pulverização de agrotóxicos. 

Mato Grosso

A nascente a ser recuperada está na comunidade Poço Azul, no município de Poxoréu. A comunidade do local é composta por 16 famílias tradicionais. A nascente está secando devido à falta de vegetação nativa, o que coloca em risco a subsistência da comunidade, já precisam da água para o plantio de hortas, quintais produtivos e pequenas roças.

Mato Grosso do Sul 

A nascente a ser recuperada está no município de Sidrolândia, dentro de uma área de reserva legal. As famílias que vivem nesse assentamento precisam da recuperação da nascente, que secou por conta da ação do gado que pisoteou as margens. Para recuperá-la, serão necessários novos arames e palanques, a fim de proteger o acesso, além de mudas de vegetação nativa do Cerrado.

A arrecadação da nossa primeira meta é TUDO OU NADA: 30mil reais e representa o valor mínimo para podermos arcar com os custos da Campanha, entre equipe e Benfeitoria, os custos de produção e envio das recompensas e os custos para salvar uma nascente. Mas somos ousadas e pretendemos salvar CINCO!

The Cerrado region in central Brazil is home to the sources of 8 of the country's 12 river basins. But every year, 10 small rivers die. You can help us stop this devastation.

This first goal is ALL OR NOTHING and represents the minimum amount that we need to pay for the costs of the campaign, including staff and benefactors, the costs of production and rewards, and the costs of saving the springs.

The Cerrado is the most important water recharge area in Brazil. It is the source of important rivers that flow through our country. The Cerrado encompasses more than 1/3 of Brazilian territory and is the most biodiverse savannah in the world. But, contrary to recognizing all this wealth, Brazilian politicians see the Cerrado as a frontier for agricultural expansion.

The scenario is appalling. In 2020 alone, more than 7.3 thousand km² of forests were cut down and more than 63 thousand fires were reported, according to data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). Due to its resistant and twisted vegetation, the Cerrado is seen by some as an "expendable" biome or resilient to destruction. But none of this is true!

Much of the Cerrado does not regenerate and destroying it means destroying our country's water sources.

For more than 10 years, the Pastoral Land Commission has been working on community experiments for the recuperation of springs and the soil of degraded areas of the Cerrado. The first projects were developed in the states of Goiás and Mato Grosso. Besides Goiás and Mato Grosso, now we also want to benefit communities in Maranhão, Piauí and Mato Grosso do Sul. With your help, we can guarantee that the waters keep flowing in the Cerrado and supplying the country. The SAVE A SPRING Campaign will carry out training processes with several communities and cerrado farmers in the struggle to defend the waters, land, and the forests of the region. The idea is that they become multipliers and, thus, we will build real protection networks for the springs of the Cerrado.
Piauí
Springs in the Vão do Vico Territory, Municipality of Santa Filomena. The Gamela indigenous community has 17 families and has been suffering from the action of land grabbers and the advance of soybeans. The forest cover that protects the springs was destroyed and the rains carried a lot of sand, burying many of them.
Maranhão
One of the springs of the Itapecuru River, a 1,450 km long and 50 to 120 meters wide watercourse that flows through the state of Maranhão. The first waters spring forth in the "Vão do Pinto", in the municipality of São Raimundo das Mangabeiras. The Itapecuru basin supplies 60% of the population of the capital São Luís, as well as other cities in the state.
Goiás
The source of the Caldas River supplies the entire Cruzeiro do Bom Jardim district, located in the municipality of Silvânia. Forty families survive on family agriculture there. The community faces the problem of deforestation and the reduction of water due to the advance of soybean monoculture and the spraying of pesticides.
Mato Grosso
The spring to be recovered is in the Poço Azul community, in the municipality of Poxoréu. The local community is made up of 16 traditional families. The spring is drying up due to the lack of native vegetation, which puts the community's subsistence at risk, as they need the water to plant vegetable gardens in their backyards and on small farms.
Mato Grosso do Sul
The spring to be recovered is in Sidrolândia, inside an official nature reserve. The families that live in this settlement need to recover the spring, which dried up due to the banks of the river being trampled by cattle. To recover it, new wires and boards will be needed as well as the planting of native Cerrado vegetation seedlings in order to protect the spring.

Our first goal is ALL OR NOTHING: 30,000 reais (US $6000), which represents the minimum amount to be able to pay for the costs of the campaign, between the trainings, travel and project costs to save ONE spring. But we are bold and we intend to save FIVE!

We believe in the strength of our Campaign and in the network of people who, like us, also defend the Cerrado and want to preserve it. Our final goal is R$110,000 (US $22,000), a challenge we will achieve together.
